Brillouin scattering studies in Fe3O4 across the Verwey transition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Brillouin scattering studies have been carried out on high quality single crystals of Fe3O4 with [100] and [110] faces in the temperature range of 300 to 30 K. The room temperature spectrum shows a surface Rayleigh wave (SRW) mode at 8 GHz and a longitudinal acoustic (LA) mode at 60 GHz. The SRW mode frequency shows a minimum at the Verwey transition temperature TV of 123 K. The softening of the SRW mode frequency from about 250 K to TV can be quantitatively understood as a result of a decrease in the shear elastic constant C44, arising from the coupling of shear strain to charge fluctuations. On the other hand, the LA mode frequency does not show any significant change around TV , but shows a large change in its intensity. The latter shows a maximum at around 120 K in the cooling run and at 165 K in the heating run, exhibiting a large hysteresis of 45 K. This significant change in intensity may be related to the presence of stress-induced ordering of Fe and Fe at the octahedral sites, as well as to stress-induced domain wall motion. Infrared and Raman Studies of the Verwey Transition in Magnetite. Typeset Using Revt E X 2
We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe3O4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at TV = 120 K. At temperatures below TV, we observe a

Magnetite has a different electrical resistance behavior with temperatures below and above the Verwey temperature. Here, we report on Verwey transition in Fe3O4 by means of the frequency-doubled output from the Ti-sapphire laser in pump-probe experiments and from the insulator to metal transition observed by changing the temperature at the wavelength 370nm (~3.36 eV) both for pump and probe. We...
متن کاملVerwey-type charge ordering transition in an open-shell p-electron compound
The Verwey transition in Fe3O4, a complex structural phase transition concomitant with a jump in electrical conductivity by two orders of magnitude, has been a benchmark for charge ordering (CO) phenomena in mixed-valence transition metal materials. CO is of central importance, because it frequently competes with functional properties such as superconductivity or metallic ferromagnetism. Howeve...

The Verwey transition in Fe3O4 is the first metal-insulator transition caused by charge ordering. However, the physical mechanism and influence factors of Verwey transition are still debated. Herewith, the strain effects on the electronic structure of low-temperature phase (LTP) Fe3O4 with P2/c and Cc symmetries are investigated by first-principles calculations. LTP Fe3O4 with each space group ...
متن کاملEffect of surface polishing and oxidization induced strain on electronic order at the Verwey transition in Fe3O4.
Following the controversy between two previous publications (Lorenzo et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 226401 and Garcia et al 2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 176405), we report on the influence of mechanical polishing, and subsequent sample storage, on the electronic order at the Verwey transition of highly pure magnetite, Fe(3)O(4), by resonant x-ray scattering. Contrary to expectations, mechanical...
